Greenlight hosts an evening celebrating W.S. Graham, one of the most unusual and original poets of the last century, on the occasion of a new collection of selected poems edited by Michael Hofmann and published by the New York Review of Books. The Scottish poet had a career that fell into two distinct parts. His early work was rapt and wild and incantatory—poems filled with linguistic fireworks that can be set beside those of his near contemporary Dylan Thomas. After that, Graham, who lived almost penniless with his wife in a tiny cottage, did not publish another book until the 1970s. This later work is a continual examination of thought and feeling that is also an ongoing exploration into the nature of poetic form. A variety of poets read and discuss Graham’s work, followed by a Q&A and reception with wine and scotch.
