"Luxurious, beautifully sculptured performances" — The New York Times
Nov. 8, 2018. The American String Quartet brings its powerful playing and exquisite musicianship to a collaborative presentation of music and poetry, with readings by Academy award-winning poet and war journalist, Tom Sleigh. This moving performance of inspired compositions is interwoven with Sleigh’s clear and profound view on the effects of war. Bartók’s quartet captures the unendurable grief of war written in 1940 at the beginning of WWII, at the time of his mother’s death and as he was preparing to abandon Europe. Beethoven’s “Serioso” was composed during Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna and a period of serious inner turmoil for the composer.
